Copenhagen Bike Tour

You can join our tour every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10.00 sharp, from May – August 2014

Copenhagen might not be a metropolis like London or New York, but our city is still too big to see in its entirety by walking on your own two feet. Besides, Copenhagen is famously known for being a green capital with myriads of cyclists on our endless miles of bike lanes – so why not experience Copenhagen on a bike like a native? CPHmade offers you a two hour bike tour with an English speaking guide who will show you around the city on a late morning tour. You rent the bike from us, we show you the way and we will have you back two hours later.

We will meet at Sögreni Bikes in the inner city area of Copenhagen. Payment is requested while we get the bikes ready, and then we set off on a tour where we will guide you around to a selection of landmarks and sights. What really separate our bike tours from the pack is our unique mixture of must-see sights in Copenhagen combined with an introduction to some of the great craftsmen that reside in our city. You may have heard about Danish design, but we will show you the places where it actually happens. So we leave you with so much more than ‘just’ The Little Mermaid and the Amalienborg Castle.

Tickets are available by pre-booking here, or you can try your luck and show up 15 minutes before the tour.

The price for the 2-hour tour is 299 DKK (40 EUR), and includes bicycle renting

Vesterbro Tour

Starting just behind the Central Station the working class area Vesterbro is dominated by the parallel streets Istedgade and Vesterbrogade. Vesterbro is one of the city’s most racially mixed neighborhoods and is known for its vibrant nightlife and left-of-centre “hipster” culture. Today Vesterbro is as hip as ever, and we love what the city area has become, and hopefully you will do too.

Let us show you three of the best craftsmen the city area of Vesterbro has to offer! We start off at Dybbølsgade where you will find a small bike shop called Recycles. As you may have heard in the media we LOVE our bikes here in Copenhagen and 55 % of all Copenhageners bike to work or school every day.

Recycles is a small bike workshop that – as the name reveals – is all about RECYCLING old bikes. At the Recycles shop you will find old, broken bikes that all have gone through a large restoration process, turning them into sparkly, functional and reliable bikes ready for the road!

After the visit at Recycles, we will to Mattæusgade where you will find Customs from Jamesville. Situated in an underground car park, and with a passion for old-school motorbikes, Mr. James Roper-Caldbeck runs a small shop where he builds custom-motorbikes.

Finally we will walk to Viktoriagade, where you will find the brewery Mikkeller. Mikkeller is one of the more successful micro breweries and has gained quite a lot of success around the world. Mikkeller is known to be a brewery that is constantly exploring new tastes in beer and to have a mind-set focused on quality before quantity.

The city area Amager is actually a large island in the south-east end of Copenhagen, which was once known to be quite a seedy area, characterized by barren and industrial areas. However, Amager has now undergone quite a remarkable urban renewal, which has turned the tarnished picture of Amager into new residential areas made interesting by architects like Bjarke Ingels, founder of BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group).

We will start off by meeting at Uplandsgade, where we will be acquainted with the motorcycle enthusiasts Wrenchmonkees. Wrenchmonkees is a motorcycle workshop that is constantly in pursuit of clean mechanical aesthetics and seeks to build motorcycles with an individual styling and an dynamic driving.

Next, we will walk to the Prags Boulevard where we will meet the guys from WoodCouture. Petter and Sigurd founded WoodCouture from a wish to combine pure aesthetics with true craftsmanship. Østerbro Tour

The city area Østerbro is known to be a quiet residential part of Copenhagen. Østerbro’s main street Østerbrogade offers quite a few shopping possibilities and Østerbro really stands out as paradise for food lovers, offering a wide selection of delis, fine food stores, cafés and fancy restaurants. Besides being a true Mecca for foodies, Østerbro also offers interesting and diverse manufacturing and shopping experiences, and we would like to show you some of the very best workshops that Østerbro has to offer.

We start off at Kristianiagade, where we will be introduced to SeeYouLater, which is a design studio that specializes in developing paper products for children. The two architects Ms. Sille Avlund and Ms. Charlotte Søeborg Ohlsen founded SeeYourLater with a desire to show that simple designs based on carefully chosen colours and materials animate the imaginary world of children.

After the visit at SeeYouLater, we walk to Dag Hammerskjölds Alle, where we will find the interesting shop Samarkand. Samarkand owner, Ms. Jane Eberlein, has designed and manufactured her own exotic fur hats and accessories since 1978. As an educated textile conservator in oriental embroidery and carpets, she has a rich background and knowledge of Oriental cultures, which she knows how to bring to her creations in the very best way.

Jægersborggade Tour

Jægersborggade used to be a run down and rather sad street in the Nørrebro District. Not anymore – far from that, actually. Today, Jægersborgade has completely reinvented itself and is now considered one of the most hip streets in the city. A key reason for this transformation for the better is the enormous efforts put into upgrading the street by its many small manufactures, boutiques and entrepreneurs.
We just love the street and hope you will do so, too. Let’s inject some Jægersborgade favouritism into you, as well, by showing you around to three of the most interesting small manufacturers in this street – just a 2-minute walk from each other.

We start at Karamelleriet, where Tine and Charlotte make some of the best smelling and tasting caramels in the city and where we will get a short introduction into the art of caramels production.

Then we cross the street to visit Inge at Inge Vincents, who has created her own signature ceramics – all white and all called Thinware. Inge will tell us more about her sources of inspiration and what Thinware is all about.

Now, when starting this tour with sweets, what is more appropriate than finishing in the same good style? This is why we step into RO Chokolade just next to the workshop of Inge Vincents. Here Rasmus Olsen creates his own very colourful and addictive chocolate. Just the right way to complete a visit to Jægersborggade.

Even though in Copenhagen we suffer from the lack of sunlight there is still hope that the sun still visits us from time to time – very rarely, but it does! So if you happen to get thirsty either for a beer or for a freshly brewed cup of coffee, we are here to show you the best places to go, best quality and experience guaranteed!

Our Thirsty CPHmade tour starts at Mikkeller at Viktoriagade 8, where we get the chance to meet the incredible staff eager to present to us their best beer and the newest offers. If you are looking for a place to relax while having a good beer then Mikkeller is the place to be and here we will experience a great beer-tasting, right in the middle of a stress-free atmosphere.

The next stop is another brewery, this time at Gamle Carlsberg Vej called Husbryggeriet Jacobsen – the brewery of Carlsberg local Copenhagen-made beer. For Danes Jacobsen needs no introduction, so we will just present to you a very short intro here. The beers from Jacobsen are produced with a very traditional approach and it is based on quality, ingredients, passion and dedication. Jacobsen wants to make sure that we are always more than welcome to visit them and so we will do.

The last place to visit is within a different sphere, the one of coffee, freshly and passionately brewed by Coffee Collective! Coffee is what they live and breathe for and they want to make sure that the experience you get when drinking a cup of coffee from Coffee Collective is an exceptional one. So to all the coffee-lovers: be happy and ready to enjoy the best coffee in town!

Furniture Tour

Denmark has a number of characteristics that distinguishes it from most other European countries, the most notable one being the strong passion for design and love of crafting. We know for a fact that home decoration design is part of the Danes’ national identity and daily life and names like Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl, Hans J. Wegner or Kaare Klint are bringing along the pride of the design thesaurus.
We are, therefore, really proud to present to you some of our members who will continue the tradition and honor their predecessors.

One of them and the first one to visit is Rud. Rasmussen located at Nørrebrogade, one of Denmark’s oldest and most traditional carpentries. Rud. Rasmussen dates back to the 1860s and has been producing fine Danish furniture classics ever since, setting high quality and exquisite crafting as the main priorities.

After the classic design of Rud Rasmussen, we go and see LLLP at Fælledevej – the studio where functionality, aesthetics and simplicity are the key. LLLP creates furniture for those who see the beauty in minimalism, timelessness and originality, for those who appreciate raw and simple design and for those who look for furniture with an edge.

Finally, we visit Griffen Shop, a small interior design shop, yet with fantastic design works. Griffen Shop is run by the architect Ms. Lotte Nørregaard who creates small furniture designs such as coffee tables, cupboards etc. Furthermore the shop specializes in custom-made interior designs made from a CNC-cutter.

Ceramics Tour

There are precious objects in a modern kitchen that are meant to be handled with maximum care and delicacy just like the materials they are made of, and if you didn’t figure out yet, we are talking about ceramics.
CPHmade has a range of members that produce ceramics and we can tell that each piece of work has a story of its own. This tour has three proposals of ceramic producers and they are: Inge Vincents, Tina Marie Bentsen and Signe Schjøth.

Jægersborggade is a street where there are located a lot of CPHmade members and Inge Vincents is the one we are visiting today. Ms. Inge designs and produces the most beautiful ceramics – often paper thin and at the edge of what is functional. Hence the product range name ‘thinware’. Here is where we will see purely white ceramics – Inge’s own signature – because she prefers a clean look of her thinware and believes that color can be disturbing.

We move forward to Vesterbrogade 24b, where we will go visit Ms. Tina Marie Bentsen. Ms. Tina Marie Bentsen is an artist who works in the intersection between functional and story-telling creations. Her signature is simplicity and colorful creations. All her creations are designed, created and hand-made in her own work shop in the Vesterbro district.

We wrap up the tour by dropping by at Signe Schjøth’s shop (Designer ZOO) at Vesterbrogade 137 where Ms. Signe produces her serie of ceramics – SIGNE SCHJØTH Interior. All products are developed and designed with an understated humour, love of the material and whimsical shapes and details. The inspiration comes from Signe’s ceramic art. Each product is handmade in Copenhagen and is a small piece of art.

The tour starts with Pia Christensen, who will show us her unique fur designs for which she has chosen a traditional approach, yet in a quite contemporary version. We will stumble upon the showroom as we take a stroll around the Kongens Nytorv area.

Then we continue the tour by visiting one of Copenhagen’s finest jewelers, called P. Hertz - characterized by a very traditional style. The approach embraced by P. Hertz has resulted in a carefully selected range of exclusive jewelleries and we will get the chance to contemplate it at their shop on Købmagergade.

The final stop will be at Thorseng Lærche’s Modesalon situated next to  Kongens Have downtown Copenhagen. Here we will find a very elegant ‘dressing room’. Here all the designs come to life and Ms. Lærche’s haute couture models are fitted to perfection in excuisited materials of the highest quality.

Nørrebro Historical

Copenhagen is an old city and has a lot of different stories to tell you. When you walk around town, you will notice the well-preserved charming old buildings, giving you the chance to see small glimpses of what Copenhagen used to look like.

Let us introduce you to three craftsmen that retain their businesses in buildings where it all started!

We will start of by meeting at Nørrebrogade, where we will step inside the universe of Rud. Rasmussen. Rud. Rasmussen dates back to the 1860s and has been producing fine Danish furniture designs ever since, including the creations of famous designers like Hans J. Wegner and Børge Mogensen. Rud. Rasmussens mission is to produce Danish furniture classics in the very best handmade quality!

Finally, we will walk to Nørregade where we find Sømods Bolcher, a candy factory that looks like it has been grabbed from a fairy-tale, with its picket fence and cute old window with stripped shutters. The factory has been family-owned for more than a 100 years and the original recipes are still used today! In their factory we will experience the making of Sømods Bolcher and who knows you might get to taste a piece of the mouth watering candies!

Inner City Historical

Copenhagen is an old city and has a lot of different stories to tell you. When you walk around town you will notice the well-preserved charming old buildings, giving you the chance to see small glimpses of what Copenhagen used to look like.

Let us introduce you to three craftsmen that retain their businesses in buildings, where it all started!

We will start off, by meeting at Løngangstræde 25 where we will be presented to the fabric and tailor shop Hvidberg Stoffer. Hvidberg Stoffer is one of the oldest shops in Copenhagen, and has since 1780 distributed only the highest quality of fabrics and textiles to a wide range of different industries, including theatres, fashion houses and tailors. Nowadays, the charming shop on Løngangsstræde also offers high quality tailored goods like suits, shirts dresses and coats.

Next, we will go to Klosterstræde where we will meet Co’libri. From Co’libri’s workshop we will experience the making of Co’libri’s amazing quality of bookbinding. The small bookbindery uses only the highest quality of materials, including goatskin and hand marbled paper. Co’libri’s high quality is actually represented in the world’s best Restaurant Noma, where Co’libri crafted the wine cards.

Finally, we will walk to Peder Skrams Gade, where we will meet and greet the tie maker Søren Skifter. The Copenhagen-based tie maker is the third generation of the family-owned business “Søren Skifter A/S”, and with more than 90 years of experience within tie making Søren Skifter sure knows how a tie should feel and look like.
