Mikkeller brewing

Mikkeller

The story of Mikkeller is the story of two young homebrewers, who in a few years went from hobby brewing at home in the kitchen to national and international recognition.

Since August 2007 Mikkel Borg Bjergsø has run Mikkeller on his own.

The succes is partly due to the brewerys focus on creating challenging beers that test the boundaries and where quality always comes before quantity. In other words, uncompromising beer.

The brewery want to challenge the Danes’ taste buds with intense taste  adventures, and some of the inspiration is found on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean where the American breweries aren’t afraid to play and break all the rules. Mikkeller wants to provoke some of this inventiveness in Danish beer brewing, so why not show the way?

Mikkeller’s beer disruption

In a world flooded with mass-produced beer Mikkeller stands out with their niche beers. Since Mikkel Borg started the Mikkeller brewery in 2006 he has become world-famous with his range of innovative beers.

Mikkeller’s uncompromising approach has led to being rated among the worlds’ top 50 micro breweries – ahead of more than 5700 other micro breweries around the globe. And Mikkeller’s Beer Geek Breakfast has been rated the world’s best stout by the beer site ratebeer.com.

The success has also led to the opening of three new Mikkeller beer bars in 2013 – San Francisco, Bangkok and Stockholm. In fact, so popular is Mikkeller today that Mikkel himself constantly travels the world to tell about his beers and give lectures on beer innovation.

CPHmade salutes Mikkeller with their success, and we see this as solid proof that craftsmanship matters.

Member News Monday

Another week has passed in the CPHmade-network, and to keep you updated about our members’ activities we’ve assembled some of the passed week’s highlights in Member News Monday.

• The jewellery designer Karina Hunnerup is ready with a new astonishing piece of jewellery. HUNN Jewellery just launched the Shell Ring crafted in 18ct gold, which matches quite well with all the sun we’ve been blessed with lately. Pay Hunn Jewellery a visit in Peder Hvitfeldts Stræde 10 in Copenhagen’s inner city area, and see the astonishing SHELL ring with your own eyes.

• The hardworking brewers from Nørrebro Bryghus just finished up on a new, bone-dry version of the pale ale called TØRSTIG. To our non-danish readers TØRSTIG means THIRSTY, and on their location on Ryesgade 3, Nørrebro Bryghus is now ready to serve you a chilled glass of the refreshing TØRSTIG, straight from the tap.

• More news about beer. Mikkeller just added a new variant to their “Beer Geek” project, offering you the chance of quenching your thirst with a Vanilla Milkshake inspired oatmeal stout.
A strong vanilla flavor as an ingredient in beer may sound like an odd combination, however we hear that the result is delightful and refreshing.
You can buy Mikkeller’s Vanilla Shake in their webshop now.

• NEW Member to the CPHmade Network.
In our search for new members to the CPHmade network, we recently came across a relatively new interior design company called Virkvärftet.
Virkvärftet crafts quirky and cool accessories for the home, in a style that’s easily recognized.
The products from Virkvärftet are made from a laser cutter, and assembled by human hand.
We’re pleased to inform you that Virkvärftet is now a part of the CPHmade network. Stay tuned for more news about Virkvärftet in the future.

3 Local breweries!

Beer brewers from Copenhagen!

It seems like spring is finally here, and we’ve been given quite a lot of the sun that we missed so much. From our humble workspace we can see that cafés, restaurants and bars are slowly preparing for their outdoors service. Besides higher temperatures, this usually means that the focus on beer is increasing considerably. We really like our beer in Copenhagen, and we’re known all over the world for our traditional beers, Carlsberg and Tuborg. But if you’re looking for something different, you should know that Copenhagen actually has three fantastic individual breweries with an experimental approach to both taste and brewing.

Mikkeller

Mikkeller is a rather small brewery that has gained a lot of success, due to its experimental interpretations on every process in brewing a beer.
Mikkeller started out as a bar on Viktoriagade in Copenhagen’s city area Vesterbro, but now the demand for more beer from Mikkeller made the team behind the little brewery plan on opening up another bar in the city area Nørrebro. Visit Mikkeller Bar on Viktoriagade 8, 1655 København V

Nørrebro Bryghus

Nørrebro Bryghus is a brewery that’s based in Copenhagen’s city area, Nørrebro. The brewery started off in 2003 as a bar and a restaurant centred on beer. Today, ten years later, the little brewery has become an institution within the business, and is well known in all parts of Denmark. However, the approach to brewing beer is still the same as it was ten years ago. Everything is allowed, every kind of taste is allowed as long as the craftsmanship is respected, and the result is superb.
Visit Nørrebro Bryghus on Ryesgade 3, 2200 København N

Husbryggeriet Jacobsen

Husbryggeriet Jacobsen is a part of the largest brewing company in Denmark, Carlsberg. Jacobsen brews a wide range of exclusive, special beers, and is actually the only part of the Carlsberg brewery Group that’s still brewing in Copenhagen. The Jacobsen brewery is retaining proud traditions within brewery, and only the best ingredients are good enough for their beer.

Mikkeller is Expanding

Mikkeller - To Øl

Beautiful beer glasses from To Øl presented with a To Øl beer and a Mikkeller speed opener.

CPHmade member Mikkeller is not only opening the new bar ”Mikkeller and friends”, it is also investing in the small successful Danish micro brewery To Øl (Two Beers). To Øl is founded by Tore Gynther and Tobias Emil Jensen, two passionated beer brewers who actually know Mikkeller owner Mikkel Borg Bjergsø from far back. Before going into beer brewing Mikkel Borg Bjergsø was science teacher in highschool for Gynther and Jensen, and after Borg Bjergsø’s opening of Mikkeller Bar the two youngsters started working there as a spare time job and developed their skills in beer brewing. The passion for beer increased and in 2010 Gynther and Jensen started To Øl on their own. In 2012 they brew 124.300 litre of beer and they were sold in 25 different countries.

Mikkel Borg Bjergsø is now investing in To Øl with the objective to develop the business together with Gynther and Jensen and to ensure the continuing flow of new tasty beers of highest quality and at last to gain a stronger brand for both To Øl and Mikkeller.

We are looking forward to follow the development of the action.
