Hvalsøe

Hvalsøe was founded in February 2017, and is a small company with a feel for design and a focus on quality. The drive behind Hvalsøe is a desire to challenge traditional design of everyday products, through handpicked quality materials. Sivellink

Copenhagen images – posters and prints.
Designed and printed in Østerbro.

Emma Sivell aka Sivellink has a huge Copenhagen crush.

The illustrations she has developed into prints are from her online sketchbook “An Icon a Day”. Images of Copenhagen architecture, iconic neon signs, Copenhagen animals and characters.

“I had been out of the design industry for more than 5 years. I had no portfolio and no client base. I started the “icon a day” project at the end of 2013 to build on both. I wanted to show myself and others what an ex textile print designer could do. When you start a project like this it needs to be something you love and the work needs to come from the heart. In the beginning it’s you alone in the evenings just working with the belief things can change…..if it isn’t something you enjoy, you have a passion for…you simply won’t keep going.

I love design rich, colourful, “drop-dead” gorgeous Copenhagen and she became my sketchbook subject.

The response was amazing, both from the new clients I had craved and from my followers on the sketchbook blog.
Almost too good…..and as a result, sometimes the blog gets neglected.

It became apparent quite quickly that there was an interest in prints so I teamed up with a great local print company to produce the work. It’s perfect because not only do I get to see all my prints off the press, but I also get to support a family run local business. We have spent the last 6 months building my collection of Copenhagen prints and the start of Sivellink”.

Claydies

Claydies is a collaboration between us: Karen Kjældgård-Larsen and Tine Broksø. We work with ceramics, arts and crafts and design, and often we let the different fields interact. We are situated in Copenhagen NV.

We make products based on our wishes and ideals. Our work is conceptual, and it is primarily the concept that decides the outcome of the project.

We use topics far away from the traditional ceramic workfield to emphasize the story about the ceramic piece. Like when we did a fashion-show wearing ceramic bowls, presenting hair-styles, upside down on our heads.

The whole tradition of making handmade objects, and the art of the handicraft, is also of great interest to us. Often we explore different methods and old traditions in the arts and crafts field. The goal is then to give a specific working-method new life, and to make objects that let us reflect on our history.

Our conceptual approach has made it possible for us to work together within one artistic identity, and our co-operation, dialogue and common goal define the foundation of Claydies.

Lone Løvschal

I’m a silversmith and designer working with a wide range of products; mainly jewellery, silverware and cutlery.
My work takes its starting point in the way we intend to use the objects in our daily life. By using organic and fluid forms, curved elegant lines and a strong graphic idiom, my aim is to create objects for the senses.

With my solid understanding of craftsmanship and materials, I design and make objects that are sensuous and tempting; that invite handling and wearing.

Spoons have a special place in my heart, due to their friendly and feminine character, but also because they represent everyday life, from birth to death, and always have done. When forging a spoon from a bar of silver I feel very happy; and it gives me great pleasure to transform a piece of raw metal into something so useful and elegant.

I find equal pleasure in designing for mass production as well as for limited series or one-offs. The way a piece of work is made is always of great interest to me. Technical considerations are not a hindrance to my creativity; If anything they feed into the development of a design.

Elsass Jewelry

Pernille Elsass says:

My ambition with Elsass Jewelry is to create exclusive designs for modern women and men. As a goldsmith am I doing all the work by hand and using craft a strong tradition of building quality jewelry which combines classic elegance with Scandinavian minimalism.

The inspiration for many of my jewelry comes from my fascination with the moon’s incredible expressions and forms. Even as I was a child I found the moon exciting and great to study. The great variations from crisp, white, circular shapes in the dark night sky, the deep orange, sensuous forms. The different sides of the moon during the year has given my a lot inspiration – both as a person and as a goldsmith.

Often I choose the understated detail of the jewelry must be especially evident to the one who wears the jewelry. It helps to strengthen the customer’s personal relationship with his jewelry.

I work primarily in gold and diamonds and silver. Neither the materials or processing, I am sacrificing quality. This means that the jewelery can be used in daily life, for life.

TRAUM

The one-woman company TRAUM – designs and produces unique bags and containers in unusual shapes, colors and materials. A TRAUM bag or container is often unconventional either by the choice of method, the design, the material or the purpose.

For instance the SKOK: A container designed for men and their contents of pockets: Phones, keys, wallet, coins placed and sometimes misplaced. A beautiful shape inspired by an artichoke, cut out of one piece of Spanish grain leather and assembled with a leather cord. So simple – so obvious – so needed.

Or the bags produced without the use of thread or the TRAUM bag strap that works both as a lock, a shoulder strap and a cross strap used by cyclists carrying their bag on the back.

TRAUM is bags and containers that last for long and gest more beautiful by age. TRAUM is pieces that you keep and carry as sculptures or jewelry, pieces that keeps their value because they identify your statement of chosen something unique.

You are always welcome to visit me. Just call me or send me an email.

Butchers & Bicycles

Named for its location in Copenhagen’s meat-packing district, Butchers & Bicycles is headed up by entrepreneurs Morten Wagener, Morten Mogensen and Jakob Munk.

In their stylish showroom and assembly shop, the three design-engineers hand build uncompromising cargo trikes with unique handling features and safety details.

Although there are many obvious benefits of cargo bikes, as we know them, they have so far lagged the joy of cycling. We have set out to change that”.

So say the team behind one of the most exciting new brands to represent the unique bicycling culture of Copenhagen.

The first cargo trike from Butchers & Bicycles — simply called the Mk I – is for anyone who loves cycling. It challenges the perception of how fun and easy riding a cargo bike can be without compromising usability.

FUNDI

Fundi Carpentery was established in 2012 by carpenter Jacob Winther.

Why did you choose to start Fundi furniture?

Maybe I’m a little old-fashioned. I like working with my hands and my creativity. To follow my products from concept to completion. I do not compromise on the quality on what I provide. As a master in my own house I live out my ambition to achieve the perfect solution every time, and give every piece of wood I work with maximum attention. And so was my grandfather, whom I have always looked up to as a carpenter. The profession is passed down causing it to provide even more sense to me.

Where do you find inspiration for your furniture?

From where I get my inspiration? Well … my big furniture idols are Danish designers such as Hans J. Wegner and Finn Juhl. Their designs are loved all over the world and still stand to this day, because they managed to get the functionality and beauty to meet at a higher level. But inspiration can come from anywhere in the world around me. Traditionally, the ideas also from the directions given by my customers.

 Why work with wood?

I’m a fan of wood. It’s great to work with such a living material – and it requires both knowledge and care to select the right piece of wood for each piece of furniture. The furniture I make is supposed to bring joy to the buyer for many years – perhaps even be passed down from generation to generation. Therefore, the materials’ quality and durability are essential.

Have customers something to say?

Yes! My customers are my best partners. The vast majority of furniture from Fundi is actually done in close cooperation with the customer. It makes no sense to work in the dark to make furniture that nobody wants to own. The best moment for me is when I deliver a piece of furniture that makes the customer really happy. It is this joy that makes me continue.

When you invest in a piece of furniture from Fundi, you get a piece of handmade designs that have received my dedicated attention from sketch to final oil strokes.

Chokolade Hex

Simple, honest and tasty!

Would you like to discover that your feet leave the ground, just a moment?
When you taste the chocolate from Chocolate-Hex, you have the chance of that happening!
Now it’s “only” a piece of chocolate …

My name is Tina Møller. My company, Chocolate-Hex is a small dedicated company where I produce hand-made chocolates. The chocolate is produced in my beautiful workshop in Husum where I have host production and shop.

Featuring a combination of ingredients in Chocolate-Hex’ products that you can not get elsewhere, with a strong, tasty but not very sweet taste. I have hand-picked my raw materials from various suppliers to get the right flavor of my chocolates, both in the classical and the like have different ingredients than the usual.

It’s my many years of creative work, not just in chocolate production but also in theater and commercials, which underlies the workmanship and aesthetic in my chocolate.
The result is a filled chocolate which is personal and unconventional with lots of flavor and a great love for the very experience it is to work with good chocolate.

I would like to mesmerize people so they come back to enjoy my chocolates. That’s partly why my company is called Chocolate-Hex!

SIGAR Hats & Caps

Sigarhats is a small company, making headwear for locals and foreigners in Copenhagen North West. We proudly produce all of our headwear in a small basement, using the finest fabrics, making the most supreme hats & caps. As a starting point all of our caps are unique designs. We further more like the idea of different concepts:

Made-on-demand caps, is where the owners choice of fabric, shape, size of bill and personal printed neck label makes the final result. One-meter-production is where the fabric used is only available in total of one meter at the production site. After being used in various projects, new patterns and fabrics will replace it, never to be replicated. Two-of-a-kind is building up a story attached to the product. It lets you carry a cap that no one else has, except for one other person on the planet. And it lets you know a fraction of that person’s life. SIGAR Hats likes to consider you as part of the material that creates us. Therefore do not hesitate to get yourself involved, and try to build up my world, on the values of your own.

HandcraftedCPH

HandcraftedCph is local, handmade jewellery, thought as a playful mix of graphic design, traditional craftsmanship and tendencies from the streets of Copenhagen.

The brand is focused around simple, raw and well-thought designs – in sterling silver and gold. Earrings, rings, cuffs and simple bracelets – that are made to be worn, and will change and get a unique look as you use them.

Handcrafted is constructed in a small workshop at Vesterbro – Copenhagen. The outset is to capture a look that is both spirited, unique and goes well with your everyday attire.

Handcrafted work in pure materials, as to avoid the risk of allergies. In order to keep the prices reasonable the base is of the 925/- sterling silver, gold-plated silver is between 18-24 carats depending on the look.

The idea behind the project, is to construct a reasonably priced product, made by hand in Copenhagen. And to construct individual design ideas and unique products through interaction with the costumer.

Tine Lindhard

Tine Lindhard Vejsnæs is a Danish goldsmith. Lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark. Jewelry has always been a big part of my life. At an early age, I was introduced to this fascinating world were small things give great pleasure.

In 2004, I started my four years apprenticeship in Roskilde, Denmark, and during this period, I learned the craft and the processes of creating custom-made jewelry. This valuable period inspired me to continue to look for new ways of designing and using jewelry.

My designs are characterized by having a specific functional purpose as well as being elegant. This functionality enables the user to apply the jewelry in different ways, which makes the jewelry more than just a decorating piece, it becomes a personal statement. An example is the beautiful pendant that allows the owner to add a personal fragrance to their liking. Or the ring that can open up to fit any type of finger. Simple designs that allow each user to add their own touch to the jewelry and feel unique.

My inspiration comes from everyday life. The key holes and hinges from old doors, various shapes and forms from old buildings give me new ideas. I am also inspired by the elaborate functional jewelry from the Middle Ages which combined with funkis minimalistic design merge into new elegant jewelry that also has a functional purpose.

Nord by Thomsen

Miss Nordby Thomsen says:

‘When working with jewellery I use a range of materials; leather, wood, plastic, lace, gems, gold, silver and diamonds. The properties of each material play an important part in the design process.

All my pieces are designed and handmade here in Denmark, as it is very important to me, that there is a little though of spirit and fantasy in each one.

I seek my inspiration in in fairy tales, picture books, the arts, cinema and illustrations. The biggest source, however, is my ever present muse Snow and my world Nord.

My World – Nord

Nord is a fairy tale world I have created. A place draped in everything glorious. A place where elves play alongside unicorns and Moon rabbits go on vacation. It is the one place where nothing is impossible.

It is where I go when creativity and imagination is running low and I am in need of an enchanting refill.

When Nord meets reality something amazing happens. My jewellery comes to life and I create pieces that bring a little fantasy and wonder to everyday city life.

My Muse – Snow

Snow – She arrived on day of immense beauty. Large flakes of snow where dancing in mid- air as if they were celebrating the genesis of this wonderful being. A snow fairy . My muse. So delicate and magnificent that everything she lays her eyes upon, turns radiant and glorious like the jewellery she so generously inspires.

Yet, she might be a fairy. But nothing makes her feel better than living amongst us people. She lives close to the castle Rosenborg and the Crown Jewels because she loves the way they sparkle.

Snow and her essence is brought to life by the people who love her. She is in my heart and lives in my pieces; worn on the hands and around the necks of those seeking her inspiration as they pass through our busy world. She is the little twinkle of excitement that we feel when we discover a thing of beauty.

She is a curious little being, full of light-hearted and wondrous ideas. When Mondays are weighing me down, she is by my side guiding me back to the glorious world of Nord, where I can always find the magic that inspires me, my life, and the pieces I create.

Designritter.com particularly works with a special type of building material called OSB (oriented strand board). The wood plates are processed into tables, stools, closets, and cupboards – or whatever you need. The material is normally very coarse and rough but with the subsequent processing of designritter.com it appears smooth and inviting.

Besides furniture, designritter.com specializes in individual home solutions and remodeling such as new bathrooms, office remodeling, customized furniture (e.g. walk-in closets) and interior design (e.g of bars and restaurant).

Designritter.com also has a selection of own design of lamps and active speakers.

The furniture is handmade and of high quality and meticulous preparation. David Ritter produces (on request) all furniture in Copenhagen by himself. Larger projects are executed in cooperation with a local carpenter.

Leather Projects

Leather Projects is founded from a passion. A passion for history, great craftsmanship and premium materials. The whole project started off with a search for the perfect wallet. The founder of Leather Projects, Mr. Jeppe Dencker, was in need of a new wallet – and was not able to find one that matched his expectations of quality and looks. Thus, Mr. Dencker decided to craft his own, and the results were quite impressive. Soon he had friends, friend’s friends and family queuing up. They all wanted a piece of Mr. Dencker’s Leather Projects.

A lot of happened since then, but the mainstay is still the same. A constant strive for the perfect product. This particular mainstay is also the main reason why every product from Leather Projects is cut and sewn by hand, in our workshop in Copenhagen.

Isangs

At Isangs, you don’t have to look for the “fair trade” or “green” versions of our products, because all the things we make live up to the same standards. That’s because for us, a real commitment is about taking a clear stand, not just about highlighting a few sustainable initiatives. Of course, we’re always trying to improve the way we do things over here, but we’re committed to providing you with real alternative hair and body care

Here’s what we stand for…

Organic & natural

No pesticides. No GMOs. No artificial colors. No artificial fragrances. No artificial anything

We only use natural ingredients that are organically grown or sustainably harvested from the wild.

Fair Trade

Fair trade as solidarity, not charity

Fair trade is a way of standing in solidarity with small-scale producers. It’s not about giving charitable hand-outs, but about respecting the basic rights of workers and supporting labour struggles. For us, this means working directly with small-scale farmers and producer cooperatives, using fair trade certified ingredients, and buying through fair trade suppliers when we can’t afford the bulk to buy direct.

 Vegan

100% Vegan and Cruelty free. No animal fats, animal byproducts or hidden animal derivatives

We think there’re lots of ways to treat animals with respect. But our products are all vegan because that’s the clearest stand we can take against factory farming, environmentally damaging livestock production, and the unnecessary use of animals or animal-products in cosmetics.

Recycled & Recyclable Packaging

Because it doesn’t make sense to sell sustainable products wrapped in unsustainable packaging

For us, is seems obvious that our packaging should have the same ethics as our products, and shouldn’t end up in a landfill or sitting in the bottom of the ocean for 1000 years. That’s why we use recyled, sustaonable and recyclable materials in all our packaging.

Effective Products

Sure we can get a little nerdy about our raw ingredients, but the main reason we’re here is to make great products that work and leave your hair and skin healthier and looking great!

Flavio Deslandes/Bambucicletas

When Flavio Deslandes – the Brazilian designer behind the Danish design company of the same name – moved to Copenhagen, Denmark in year 2000 he experienced a whole new world of bicycles and biking culture. Ever since, Flavio has been working for several companies in the bicycle industry – with mechanics, frame building, product development and design. Today, Flavio has put his heart and soul into the development and perfection of a bike made from bamboo. You might consider bamboo a quite unusual material to work with, but from ancient times man has used Bamboo for construction of houses, furniture, fences, mats as well as objects of decorative and personal use – and also as a source of food. Bamboo is attracting more and more interest of researches that are revealing new and important uses from bamboo.

Flavio says: “Bamboo is nature’s own organic tube structure. I have always believed that this fine material has a great potential. The challenge to make it work has kept me going. My motivation was always the opportunity to connect modern design with natural materials. The idea to make this connection in a bicycle is logical if you think about it: Biking is a very energy effective way of transportation. And combining a sustainable material as bamboo with energy free mobility feels quite right.”

Emquies-Holstein

From their charming goldsmith studio in the heart of Copenhagen designers Diana Holstein and Hanan Emquies make personal handcrafted jewellery with a modern twist and a keen eye on tradition. The creative duo is driven by a passion for individual storytelling, unique design and uncompromising craftsmanship which in just a few years has turned jewellery by Emquies-Holstein into acclaimed conversation pieces.

Personal Jewelry with Modern Tradition
From their charming goldsmith studio and flagship store in the heart of Copenhagen designers Diana Holstein and Hanan Emquies make personal jewelry with a modern twist and a keen eye on tradition. The creative duo is driven by a passion for individual storytelling, which in just a few years has turned jewelry by Emquies-Holstein into internationally acclaimed conversation pieces.
Since 2007 the creativity and passion of Diana Holstein and Hanan Emquies has evolved solely around their mutual love brand Emquies-Holstein. Before joining forces privately as well as professionally the couple has worked with some of the world’s finest designer labels such as Tiffany & Co, Ralph Lauren, Royal Copenhagen and George Jensen Damask, but today their uncompromising craftsmanship and characteristic expression is dedicated solely to their own collections.

In 2010 Emquies-Holstein moved to charming new settings in Copenhagen’s design district. From the ceiling gigantic spotlights illuminate the buzzing machines, while glass cases display the latest collections, enabling visitors to experience the daily work of the designers at close hand. Diana Holstein and Hanan Emquies also work closely with the customers when it comes to meeting their specific demands, as storytelling and timeless jewelry is the very DNA of Emquies-Holstein as a brand.

Artistic diversity & common vision
With a background in graphic design, construction building and jewelry design Emquies-Holstein is an unusual and happy blend of arts. What Diana Holstein and Hanan Emquies have in common is a desire to salute everyday life and rituals, while bending the rules of traditional jewelry design. Through the years inspiration have come from surprising, yet always poetic places. From sensual chocolate wrapping to the stimulating rhythm of the flamenco dance, since expression and a sculptural mode of expression is at the heart of every jewelry piece by Emquies-Holstein.

The artistic diversity of the couple brings scope and weight to the Emquies-Holstein portfolio and today the brand is synonymous with precious jewelry with a modern twist for all life’s special occasion. The ones prescribed by tradition as well as the ones, you invent yourself…

Tradition with a modern twist
Keeping with tradition, while at that the same time adding a modern twist to the classics is at the core of Emquies-Holstein’s design. Diana Holstein and Hanan Emquies are fascinated by the symbolic value attached to jewelry and look upon their design as conversation pieces rather than just decorative accessories. In their rings, bracelets and necklaces social conventions, artistic vision and the life of the wearer fuse into one original story, which – alongside uncompromising quality – places jewelry by Emquies-Holstein between individually crafted artwork and mass production.

Emquies-Holstein designs for women and men, grownups and kids using precious metals such as sterling silver, gold, white gold, diamonds, pearls and enamel. Experience the unique collections at www.emquies-holstein.com or pay a visit to the flagship store at Lille Kirkestræde. The designers are always pleased to learn about your specific needs and wishes, while you gain insight into old craftsmanship and the traditions of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Griffen Shop

Griffen Shop – A Holy Trinity

In the very heart of Copenhagen’s vibrant city area, Nørrebro, you’ll find a small interior design shop called Griffen Shop.
Griffen Shop is based on a unique concept, where the shop is an extension of Griffen Studios and Griffen Workshop, where the furniture is designed and produced. The combination of design studio, workshop and store gives Griffen Shop the opportunity of designing, producing and selling products at the same place. This particular trinity provides Griffen Shop’s customers, with the possibility to custom-made their products.

Custom-made interior designs, at IKEA-prices

The architect Lotte Nørregaard runs the little shop on Griffenfeldsgade 22, and in the shop you’ll find her designs within interior design. However, Griffen Shop’s real talent lies within distributing custom-made interior, at reasonable prices.
To help Griffen Shop on delivering custom-made interior designs, the little shop teamed up with a very powerful tool called a CNC-cutter (Computer Numerical Control). The CNC-cutter is basically a cutter that allows you to transform digital drawing material into regular objects.
Instead of printing on regular paper, the machine cuts out the drawings directly on the material you want. The cut-outs are very, very accurate, and that actually just leaves you with assembling your design. This process saves you from going to an actual carpenter, and that certainly affects the price. Griffen Shop seeks to craft unique, custom-made interior design that’s actually able to compete price-wise with the mass-produced furniture from IKEA.

Sustainable interior design by Griffen Shop

The “trinity” concept that lies within Griffen Shop simplifies logistics and costs. Griffen Shop does not use storage, transportation and packaging. Therefore Griffen Shop can compete with mass production rates and significantly reduce the CO2 footprint.

Griffen Shops designs are using materials from a single source that helps reducing the delivery time. The material is primarily birch plywood from FSC-certified forests.

Eentileen

1:1 was founded in 2005 as an alternative to the conventional studio
The name 1:1 stems from the vision of a new architectural form, where the digital world and analog building tradition meet – without borders between architect who designs and the workmen who builds. Our skills combine the two worlds through the use of new digital production methods. We offer a coherent, transparent and optimized building process – one step from idea to finished product.

1:1 combines architectural services and digital fabrication workshop under one roof
We do all tasks within construction environment – from interior to construction. We offer tailor-made solutions with a focus on architectural quality and common sense at competitive prices. We have a special interest in the city as a phenomenon and your home’s countless creation opportunities.

1:1 makes innovative use of the industry’s potentials and use cutting edge CNC technology in the development of the first digital production house in Denmark
The workshop in Nørrebro is a daily pivot, and it houses cnc factory – our in-house production unit. Here digital drawings are translated directly into reality on our CNC machine. Here you can have your architect-designed house delivered as a complete assembly system or have your own specific order produced. We have a penchant for having material between your hands and outlines and experimenting in all kinds of materials and environments in 1:1 at our workshop in the basement.

1:1 is internationally based, with close collaborator in London
Our partner in London FACIT delivers and develops cutting edge software and hardware for digital production houses. In close cooperation with FACIT we have set ourselves a common goal: To do away with construction industry standards and introduce the innovative standard house – a tailormade building system.

1:1 participates in competitions with a network of qualified architects
A special selection of qualified architects provide the framework for our competitive business. Here we discuss the the architectual future and devise visions for tomorrow’s world. This is where we gather inspiration for our work and keep abreast of tomorrow’s technologies and architectural potentials.

1:1 shares a common academic background from the School of Architecture, where the foundation stone was laid
Through abroad in e.g. Arizona and New York as well as site and architectural experience in Denmark (notably Henning Larsen, 3XN, Søren Robert Lund, Claus Bjarrum) architecture was put into perspective and our ambition to do things differently grounded. Today Nicholas teaches at School of Architecture, which still inspires us to think about new opportunities in a rapidly growing construction industry.

WoodCouture

WoodCouture, handmade architecture

WoodCouture keeps exploring the boarders between architecture and craft with custom made skis and furniture. Architects Petter Brandberg and Sigurd Elling are driven by a passion for quality and the unique. In their Copenhagen workshop materials, form and process are constantly challenged. WoodCouture produces a wide range of products. Each product is made with focus on function and user experience.

”I’m very interested in the feeling you have when skiing. Not in how fast or how much the skis turn. But in how it feels when you turn and how the skis respond when you put pressure on them.” (Petter Brandberg, ski maker and architect, WoodCouture)

”Our architectural process begins with the first line on paper and doesn’t end until the product is done. We keep the person who will be using it in mind throughout the entire process. People come to us with their ideas and we listen, offer suggestions, sketch and build it from the ground up. Everything is custom made. No two people are the same, so our products aren’t either.” (Sigurd Elling, architect and designer, WoodCouture)

WoodCouture is part of the cultural- and entrepreneurial milieu at Prags Boulevard 43 in Copenhagen – a former paint factory which now hosts architects, cirque nouveau troupes, ceramic artists, cabinet makers, event makers, record labels, a publishing house, a gallery, and a cultural venue.

ByBi

At ByBi, we bring millions of honeybees to the city. The bees live on the roof tops of iconic buildings and businesses, where they are looked after by long term unemployed, formerly homeless and refugees. We also work with schools and local communities to bring bees and people together and show how a sustainable city can literally buzz with life. The project is a social enterprise, where all profits are re-invested in social and environmental activities.

Our products are based on high quality honey. Every part of the city has a slightly different taste because of the different flowers that grow there. And city honey is also clean. No pesticides, no GM, no unnatural treatment of the bees, and unaffected by air pollution. Find out more at www.bybi.dk

Samarkand

Jane Eberlein has designed and manufactured her own exotic fur hats and accessories since 1978. As an educated textile conservator in oriental embroidery and carpets, she has a rich background and knowledge of Oriental cultures, which she knows how to bring to her creations in the very best way, so that it blends into western trends and fashion.

Jane Eberlein`s fascination of ancient headdresses and garments with fur, began in early childhood, when she often went to the Ethnographic collection of the National Museum in Copenhagen. The old cultures of Russia, Mongolia, Siberia, China and Tibet, inspired her to design and develop a large variety of models, created throughout the years. Everything from hats, bags, gloves and shawls trimmed with fur.

Latest Jane Eberlein has had great success with wrist warmers in gorgeous brocades, trimmed and lined with fur. Her sure sense of colours, her technique and fantasy within hand embroidery combined with her knowledge of tailoring and furriery, she has created unique and exclusive headdresses and accessories. Each and every model is made from the first stitch, hand sewn in 100 % pure wool and brocades. Some models are hand embroidered with Swarovski crystals and pearls..

Jane Eberlein works with silk brocades from Christian Dior, Jean-Paul Gaultier a.o, as well as old embroideries from India and Japan. She herself prepares all the fur and she works mostly in mink, fox, occasionally in sable. The creations are classic and ageless as they give away great elegance.

Jane Eberlein ́s fur hats and accessories have been used in fashion shows, both in and out of Denmark and she has sold to Queen Silvia ́s furrier in Stockholm, The exclusive Bergdorf Goodman in New York, Neiman Marcus in Dallas, Toronto and latest in Paris in the fashion area around Avenue Montaigne.

In 1978, she opened Samarkand in the East of Copenhagen. A combination of atelier and boutique, where she in a colourful and inspiring interior (look under shops) creates and sells all of her creations. Jane Eberlein is sole agent in Demark, but sells wholesale outside Denmark.

Tom Rossau

Self-taught Danish designer Tom Rossau, started his current career in the 90’s. He started to design and sew leather clothes and eventually opened a shop in Copenhagen, in 1997. Tom has since 2004 worked mainly with natural wood veneers. At first these lights were only available from the shop on Istedgade, but in 2006 the TR4-TR7 was introduced to a broader audience at Copenhagen Furniture Fair, where the TR7 received the “Audience Favorite Award”.

Although the business is expanding Tom still holds on to the core. And the core is design. In Toms own words:

“The design process is actually quite selfish to me. It may be that the end consumer gets his or her need covered by the product, but in all honesty I do for the kick that it gives me. It’s quite a thrill to get an idea out of the blue, to work with it, to get caught up in it, to be totally consumed by the details from the early drawings over prototypes and on to production. Then there’s the magic experience when the material intended to do one prototype suddenly starts misbehaving and reveals unintended characteristics and all there is to do is to dive right in and explore these new possibilities. Inspiration comes from all around, but the determination process of limits and potentials of materials can be so interesting. At times it would be more appropriate to refer to the material as the designer and I the mere help, fetching screws and fastening lose ends…
With functionality, sustainability, and energy consumption as obvious issues of all design, it becomes an even more intriguing task to meet the demands of the end consumer. But all in all I’m a firm believer in coincidence and enhancement of the element of play in all design.”

With annual exhibitions at IMM Cologne and the Northern Light Fair in Stockholm the number of retailers sharing in the Tom Rossau story is expanding rapidly. The collection has continued to grow with the addition, in January 2010, of shelving units and a convertible coffee/dining table as well as new lamps.

“Ideally, the product covers the need of the customer – but in all honesty, I design for the kick that it gives me.”

Nyhavns Glaspusteri

Despite his English-sounding name, Christian Edwards is born and raised in Copenhagen. A hint of artistic talent has always existed in the family, but Christian did not begin to pursue his interest until the mid 90s. What first started out as a retail shop for various crafts in 1995 soon turned into a strictly glass business in 1999 and by 2004 his own studio. Working with and observing a master within glassblowing, Christian picked up the skill in less than 3 years and has been developing his own unique technique ever since. It is both a job and a hobby which he enjoys.

The glass is both designed and hand blown by Christian. His work is characterized by soft and gentle forms, muted and subtle colors, and flowing shapes. Given the long Danish maritime tradition and the shop’s waterfront location by Nyhavn, one can also discern sea motifs, waves and movement in each piece. When you see the glass, you want to run your fingers along its smooth edges and follow its curves. More than simply arousing the visual sensation, it above all heightens the sense of touch. Neither provocative nor sensational, the pieces are meant to reflect simplicity through their classic and timeless designs, while being modern and functional at the same time. Pieces include drinking glasses, champagne flutes, bowls and plates, milk and sugar sets.

Cold & Heggem

Cold & Heggem – Danish design 2012

At Cold & Heggem we design glasses in wood and genuine horn. Materials superior in lightness and character to steel and plastic; the standard materials used in industrial design. We customize, shape and craft the frame to suit your face and your desires. We also have a collection we can tailor for you personally, or use as a reference when developing your personal design.

Why Cold & Heggem

A wood frame is a unique design object with a quite different feel than a frame of steel or plastic. The delicate silver tone of ash veneer, the depth of smoked oak tree or the simple raw surface of birch veneer give quite different and tangible aesthetic qualities than artificial materials. A frame made of wood and horn feels light and comfortable to wear, and the frames can be adjusted just as easily as with metal and plastic glasses. The frames contain no allergens and are made of sustainable materials having minimum negative impact on the environment.

Who are we

The glasses are designed and handmade by Rasmus Cold, design graduate from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Rasmus developed the idea of handmade wood frames as early as 2004, and since then he has acquired an exclusive understanding of the craft. During the past eight years, Rasmus has tested the materials, developed the strength of the frames and designed glasses for satisfied customers in his studio at Pistolstræde in the heart of copenhagen.

How to get a pair…

Make an appointment, or simply drop by our studio. Here you can see and feel our designs and we can understand your wishes. From this point we can begin the design process, if you choose to get a pair of Cold & Heggem glasses.

When the frame is ready you need to insert the right glass. This is done at your own optician, and the process of adjustment is quite uncomplicated for wood as well as horn frames. We can also insert the glass in our studio if you bring it from the optician, or we can recommend opticians that we collaborate with.

For Holding Up The Trousers

For Holding Up The Trousers offers belts and suspenders handmade with quality materials. The inspiration comes mainly from old pictures and movies that showcase the late 19th century Americana. Rough craftsmanship is emphasized in order to deliver a hardwearing and honest product that will last you a long time. The materials used are sourced from suppliers who are known to deliver quality components. For Holding Up The Trousers’ products comes in heavy cardboard boxes and accompanied by ceramic buttons, all of which is handmade in Denmark.

The belts and suspenders are marked with the number 3715. The number is stamped with a device that was left behind at the farm I grew up on in the most western part of Denmark. 3715 was the number used to mark the pigs before they were sent off to the slaughterhouse. Now it’s used on the cows, in belt and suspender form.

HUNN

Jewellery designer and owner Karina Hunnerup

In a poetic world precious metal is being tranformed into jewellery of a graphic and light expression. The jewellery is hand-made, the material is being refined, and it is achieved to obtain a perfect shape. At the same time there is room for inequalitites and unpretentious meetings between precious metal and everyday negleced objects.

The simplicity of the HUNN jewellery enhances the natural beauty of women, and the use of surprising material, the stories behind, and forms add a twist to the personal expression. HUNN jewellery is inspired from everyday objects, garbage, nature´s forms, shadows and play on words.

The jewellery is made out of love for the material and its potential, beauty and poetry come to life in the preparing of silver, gold, leather, textiles, and other raw material. When the forms have found their place in a piece of jewellery, I attempt to maintain the flow of the movement from the fashioning. Therefore the jewellery has a lightness and also a frozen expression.

I opened the HUNN boutique in 2010 in Peder Hvitfeldts Stræde 10 in the heart of old Copenhagen. This is also where the jewellery is made.

In the boutique you can explore the world of the beautiful HUNN jewellery. The various pieces can be seen, touched and tried on. At the same time you can observe, how the jewellery is being made, hear about its story, see the raw material and talk with me about my work.
